FAQs
I provide end-to-end digital solutions, including full-stack web development, UX/UI design, data visualisation, and interactive animation. I deliver projects ranging from bespoke SaaS platforms to immersive web experiences. ...these are all very posh but I'm also quite happy fixing your 5 year old Wordpress website's security issues or blitzing through 32 different banners for an advertising campaign. Basically I love learning new things and so like to keep as much variety as possible in the work I do - I believe that ethos feeds back and always my skills to grow year on year.
I am based in York but work with agencies and direct clients across the UK, including London-based firms, offering both remote and on-site collaboration.
I specialise in creating custom SaaS and B2B systems tailored to specific operational requirements - my UXD background compels me to make systems that are best for the user rather than easiest to build. My portfolio includes reporting systems for the rail industry and global brand management toolkits.
I have collaborated with numerous high-profile clients, including the BBC, Google, Coca-Cola, and Sony. I frequently partner with agencies to provide technical leadership on complex digital projects.
I specialise in building custom CMS solutions tailored to specific business needs, ensuring a more secure and streamlined experience than off-the-shelf platforms like WordPress.
I frequently collaborate with UK creative agencies, acting as a "plug-and-play" senior developer and/or designer to help hit tight deadlines or solve complex technical challenges. Either as part of the team or simply white-label work on the agencies behalf.
I design and implement robust APIs and database structures to ensure your web applications are scalable, fast, and able to communicate with third-party tools. OpenGraph or REST are most common.
Yes, since 2000 I have generated the concepts, designed and developed numerous interactive games for major brands like BBC, Fanta, and M&Ms, ranging from educational CD-ROMs to modern in-app HTML5 games. It is interactive learning games where a big chunk of my awards come from.
Yes, I have experience designing and developing digital interfaces for kiosks and interactive installations used in public or corporate environments. I've done trade show work for Range Rover (touch screen configurator that controlled a real machine that presented the real-world carpet, dash and other options to the user to touch and feel) and many Pharma projects for conferences. An interesting piece of work was for Will.i.am and Selfridge's London, which was installed in the main entrance to greet the customers and [metaphorically] poke them in the face with Mr i.am's latest phone.
With over 26 years of experience, most of that as a freelancer and mostly remote, I use a disciplined approach to project management to ensure deliverables are met on time and within the agreed budget. Obviously I'm more than happy beavering away on my own and controlling my own time - I think the ratio of repeat clients I have speaks volumes about my self-management as well as my production skills.
I offer technical R&D and prototyping services to help investors and stakeholders visualise a product's potential before full-scale development begins. Where possible, I try to build with the optimistic future in mind and so the MVP is a solid base for the continuation of the project and not a dead end.
I change over time as I believe the best tech stack last year is not always the best this year and not always best for your project. My core stack includes JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3, Laravel (PHP), SQL and with extensive experience in API design, dev ops and data visualisation.
I am a BAFTA-winning interactive developer. My work has also been recognised with awards and nominations from BIMA, the Royal Television Society, Y Design, and the EMMA Foundation amongst others.
I have a proven track record in developing high-engagement interactive games and mobile apps for iOS and Android (PWAs), including high-traffic campaigns for major UK restaurant groups as well as system-critical 24/7 reporting apps for Merseyrail.
I focus on creating fluid, intuitive interfaces that prioritise user journey efficiency. I combine aesthetic design with technical performance to ensure accessibility across all device types.
You can contact me directly and we can have a no-obligation chat. I'll give you feedback on the project, any potential pitfalls or quick wins you may have missed (I've been doing this a while now!). I provide clear and honest estimations based on the scope, complexity, and timeline of the work.
Yes, I have a proven track record of building mission-critical SaaS systems and PWAs that function seamlessly across iOS, Android, and desktop devices. Including using the 'good-stuff' of PWAs like offline caching into local databases and then uploaded the user's saved data once back online.
Every project is built to be fully responsive, ensuring optimal performance and usability on smartphones, tablets, and high-resolution desktop displays. This is simply the default for over a decade now. I like to not treat the mobile screen real-estate as a lesser class citizen were possible.
I sit over both design and development as well as a background in motion and I LOVE big data. So I'm perfect for transforming complex data sets into intuitive, interactive charts and graphs to help businesses and users gain actionable insights and find that "wow, that's so obvious" signal buried in the data.
I have extensive experience in e-learning, including BAFTA-winning work for the Channel4 Learning and interactive educational tools for the Royal Institution, BBC Worldwide and Pearson Education. I've done projects that use SCORM tracking to qunatify the learner's progress.
I'm very lucky; my portfolio spans global brands like Coca-Cola, Sony, and Google to national UK businesses and charities and public sector organisations like the NHS and TfL, to sole traders and small startups. I really don't specialise to one type of client. I've done a fair amount of pharma work, but I don't pigeonhole and take on only pharma work. The same with the rail industry and restaurant chains and digital advertising - any of these I could have focused on; I find it more interesting to challenge myself and learn new things every day that sit back and coast.
SEO isn't just about the copy, I build every site with technical SEO best practices, including semantic HTML, fast load speeds, and custom meta-tag management. I do this as default for all my sites I build but can also advise or implement this for your existing site. I work with a few brilliant SEO focused copywriters that I can call upon to get the actual content focused for your needs. The proof I suppose is in this site - last time I checked it got 100/100 for SEO from Google's lighthouse but the proof of the pudding is... did you find me via a search per chance? ;)
